Join The Arc of Nevada for our online "Lunch & Learn" Democracy in Action - Preparing for the Commerce & Labor Interim Committee as part of our Seat at the Table Leadership Series. 

This training is designed to help self-advocates, family members, and community partners understand the specific committees that govern how our democracy functions in Nevada.

Training Description

In this 90-minute session, we will break down the essential role of the Joint Interim Standing Committee on Commerce & Labor. Participants will learn how to turn their lived experiences into powerful advocacy points that resonate with legislators who are currently evaluating the future of Nevada’s businesses, occupations, and labor relations.

Topics to be Covered

  • Committee 101: A clear look at the committee’s jurisdiction.
  • Effective Public Testimony: Step-by-step guidance on crafting a 2-minute "elevator pitch" for public comment.
  • Digital Advocacy: How to navigate the Nevada Legislature’s website to track meetings, submit exhibits, and view upcoming agendas.

Interim Committee Discussion Focus

During this interim, the committee is tasked with studying and making recommendations on critical issues that affect the IDD community, including:

  • Workforce Inclusion and Labor Protections: Shaping employment practices and safety standards.
  • Regulations of Healthcare Occupations: Regulates occupations and professions in healthcare, which directly impacts the licensing of providers who serve the I/DD community.
  • Health & Disability Insurance Coverage: Reviews legislation regarding what services must be covered by private health plans.
